WWN: Year 2 in Review

Weekly Wednesday Newsletter no. 102

[GREETING GOES HERE]

It's been 2 years since I started doing this art thing (Sep 23, 2022) so here are some thoughts:

Review

This year has been mostly Comics and Board Games (5ish board games and 3 comics), which I'm pretty happy about! They were 2 fields that I wanted to get into. Here's some of it (as much as I should/can/wanna show):

I really enjoyed working with Brett on Agents Without a Clue earlier this year. I learned so much about working with someone on a longer project, and the game is gonna be very fun:

The ongoing Pooh-Thulu game launching on Kickstarter next week. I got way better with the lasso tool:

Idk if I ever shared this, but here's a project that's on hold:

A fun little ANIME fan project that I turned into prints to sell at Emerald City Comic Con:

Worked on Archsage a lot with Ben, and am starting to feel like I'm getting the hang of basic framing and spacing. I need to get better at making expressions and poses more dynamic tho

But also did like 50 pages of this personal comic that we shan't speak of (because I cringe when I read it). Writing a story is something I need to work on...but I still learned a lot about drawing comics.

Did that inktober thing too (that we also shouldn't read), but I'm really happy that I completed this project. Finishing a comic really gave me confidence that I'm able to do it

I also did some random stuff on the side (remember the hot dudes? lol yikes). My favorite being this lil robot commission:

Random assortment of drawings I did for fun:

And I got to run my first marathon and hike the PCT too loll. Good times haha

So...

I think overall I'm pretty happy with how this year went. I def haven't "made it" yet (says bank account. made about 8k this year). And although I did spend a massive amount of time creating content, I haven't yet learned how to leverage that to make money.

Still, I feel like I've grown a lot. In particular, I think my line art has become more refined and my color choices have gotten better (maybe?). And it's not like nothing happened at all. I need patience to let things take place. I've found that a large part of this is just making connections, putting out work and letting things cook.

I'm considering getting a part time job. I actually did get a job for a shipping center down the street, but after the orientation I decided not to take the job. Maybe I'm arrogant or dumb not to take it, but felt like it was not a good use of my time, since it doesn't directly help me grow skills toward this art thing. Not sure what to do!

Goals

I really need to get better. In particular, I want to get better at rendering without line art, so I gotta level up my painting skills.

I'm excited for a few launches happening later this year! I needa learn how to launch a product haha

I should probably network or cold call a bit more. Especially with Christians (to get work tho silly). Woohoo!

Thank you!

Also, the last "year in review" was #50, so that means I didn't skip any weeks this year? lolll that's kind of crazy. Thanks so much for following along! I really appreciate your support. Special thanks to my mom and weird sister for helping me keep this newsletter up on the hike

Bi-Weekly Wednesday Newsletter no. 141 [GREETING GOES HERE] new zealnd What's Going On An Update Last year, I switched to doing bi-weekly newsletters after over 2 years of doing it weekly. I think that was a really great change. Accountability is valuable, and the weekly newsletter forced me to be accountable and stay in motion. But as of last year, that mindset of simply needing to just push out content no longer served me. So slowing down the cadence made sense. It was helpful to have more...

Bi-Weekly Wednesday Newsletter no. 140 [GREETING GOES HERE] we had a blackout for 22 hrs....so I had to like read a book This year was kind of wild. Here's some things I've been thinking about: Thoughts on Failure These past 3 years I’ve grown so much from having the opportunity to do things like hike and getting paid to draw. But I also realize that I need to be more thoughtful about my decisions if I also wanted to support a family or buy dino nuggets. So I decided to take a door to door...
